Pilot and Gary are traveling to Ireland

Friends:

pilot ready to boardLet all of us state positive wishes for Pilot, Gary, and his wife, as they endure international travel, including, the horrible TSA. Pilot and his guide dog captain, Gary C. Norman, Esq. L.L.M. are currently visiting Ireland.

They are visiting with their beautiful partner, Laura Norman in honor of their anniversary. Never leaving a stone unturned, as it were, Gary will also have a business meeting or two when there, as he has a law and consulting partner with who he has formed, or will form, a consultancy named the Prometheus Group. As he expects the consultancy to be a success, he hopes to have a vacation house in Ireland or in Italy in the future.

And what, I am sure there will be no bootees for Pilot on escalators in Europe. Gary trained Pilot to utilize the escalator, who is a quick study.

Pilot on the airplane to IrelandAs the first guide dog Mason of Maryland, Pilot will also have the chance to visit the Grand Lodge with Gary and Laura.

As to training issues, Gary tells me that Ireland has an active set of guide dog training organizations. So I hope Pilot has no access issues in the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Ironically, Ireland consists of two countries. Pilot, quite the well-traveled dog?

Gary tells me that, of the countries, Ireland is one of the last to work strenuously, regularly on implementing the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. So perhaps there are a lot of future work projects for Pilot in Ireland to which to return.

Pilot being Pilot, he will just kiss the jerks at the TSA – now, always.

Happy Birthday Hooper! You are 7 years old :)

Wishing Hooper a very Happy Birthday.

You might have heard this story before but whenever I think of Hooper I realize we are all connected. I was teaching a Facebook class and, of course, was showing off my Guide Dog Puppies in Training that I have posted on my Facebook page. One of my students mentioned that her sister has a working Guide Dog. Not thinking I could possibly know the dog I asked his name. She said “Hooper”! “THAT’S MY HOOPER” I exclaimed. I am friends with Carol on Facebook and can now follow Hooper’s adventures.

Hooper was born on 7/3/07 to Denzel and Vonnie. He now lives in Oregon. From Baby Hooper to Graduation into a handsome successful Guide Dog. I am so proud of you. Click here to see more about Hooper

Norman Honored for Service
By Patrick Tandy

Judge Bell at celebration Heidi Meinzer, MSBA’s Animal Law Section Chair, presents the Animal Law Distinguished Service Award to Gary Norman.

The 5th Annual Animal Law Symposium, held April 10 at Westminster Hall in Baltimore, roared with topics, including animal protection under federal and state constitutional law, damages in cases involving animals, wildlife issues, and a legislative update. The daylong event’s sponsors were the MSBA Animal Law Section, the MSBA CLE Department, and Compassion Over Killing, a non-profit animal advocacy organization.

Programming focused particularly on the evolution of case law as it relates to domesticated animals. Attorney Rebekah Lusk moderated a panel of lawyers, including Anne Benaroya, Cary J. Hansel, III, and Gary C. Norman, which discussed “Using Federal and State Constitutional Law to Further Animal Protection”.

“Being a civil rights lawyer makes me an animal rights lawyer,” said Hansel, a attorney at Joseph, Greenwald & Laake, P.A. Hansel noted that much existing chattel case law governing animals is a holdover “from a time when we were a more agrarian society and animals had more to do with tending a farm.”

Later, Hansel joined Lusk and attorney Phil Goldberg for a panel discussion titled “Perspectives on Damages in Cases Involving Animals”. This panel discussed the financial caps on damages that may be sought in many jurisdictions during incidents such as the willful slaying of domesticated animals as well as police-involved shootings of family pets.

MSBA’s Animal Law Section also presented its annual Animal Law Distinguished Service Award to Gary C. Norman, an attorney and mediator with the Maryland Department of Health and Human Services and Associate Civil Rights Commissioner with the state’s Commission on Civil Rights.

“The Section is incredibly thankful for Gary’s countless contributions to animal law, not the least of which have been co-founding the Animal Law Symposium, as well as the Mid-Atlantic Lyceum and the Mid-Atlantic Journal on Law and Public Policy,” says Heidi Meinzer, Chair of the Animal Law Section. “His accomplishments demonstrate that he is exemplary not just in the field of animal law, but in the legal profession as a whole.”

An advocate for service animals and a past Chair of the Section, Norman states, as an attorney, “it is incumbent, as it is for all citizen lawyers, to serve the community.”

Air Hollywood – Guide Dog puppies get to experience air travel on a movie set

On Saturday, Air Hollywood made their studios available to Guide Dogs for the Blind puppies in training. About 50 puppies showed up to experience what it would be like to ride on an airplane and experience going through an airport. This studio is used for many airplane scenes in the movies. It was amazing how real the experience was – we felt what it was like to taxi down a runway, take off, land, and turbulence. They also had the jetway, the security screening along with luggage and a wheelchair, and the airport terminal waiting area. All of the puppies handled the experience very well. Sights, sounds and motion that were new to most of the pups. Thank you to Air Hollywood for sharing this experience with us.

Guide Dog Pilot went to the Supreme Court for the Healthcare Ruling

Just heard: My Pilot was the only guide dog at the Supreme Court last week to hear the healthcare ruling!! Gary was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court a few months ago so he was able to attend because of his attorney privileges and he and Pilot were pretty close to some political heavy weights last week. I think Pilot sighed and took a nap though. Guess healthcare wasn’t too exciting for him 😉

Of course, I had to clarify and make sure I understood it right.

Yes Gary and Pilot were in the courtroom when the decision was read. Pretty exciting opportunity. Gary felt like some of the older attorneys were surprised to see a disabled attorney but all wanted to make sure him and Pilot got into the courtroom. Pilot stretched out and made himself comfortable!

Very proud!

Visit with Guide Dog Pilot in Washington DC

I had the opportunity to have dinner with Pilot and his family while I was in Washington DC. What an honor. Pilot is doing very well and taking good care of Gary. He is loved by Gary’s wife Laura and retired Guide Dog Langer. A very happy family.

When I got to the restaurant Gary and Laura were already at the table with Pilot laying nicely under the table. Well, he became quite animated and wiggly. I am going to take that as he was happy to see me and that he remembered me. Not sure if that is true or not but it was sure fun to see my Pilot!! Such a proud mama I am.

Petey spent the day with Elbert at the Chinese New Year 2012 Parade in Los Angeles

What a fun day! Michael went with Petey and me to Elbert’s house. We walked with Dan, Elbert, Carol, Doug and Sam to the Chinese New Year 2012 Parade in Los Angeles.

After the parade we walked to Chinatown along with the other parade goers. There was quite a crowd and a great opportunity to see Elbert work and for Petey to experience the sights, sounds and closeness of the people. Petey handled it like a pro. Elbert, as usual, was impressive as can be!

After the parade we went back to Elbert’s house where Elbert and Petey got to play together.
